Unusual Footpath Crossing: Keadby Canal Towpath Level Crossing, Lincolnshire

Date filmed: Wednesday the 3rd of April 2024 Videos filmed between 09:45 and 10:01 Route: South Humberside Main Line Althorpe (ALP) is the closest station Crossing type: Foot Path Crossing (FPC) Filming location: Keadby, Scunthorpe (DN17 3ER) A rather bizarre foot path crossing in Keadby near Scunthorpe. This foot path crossing crosses the railway on Keadby's unique sliding bridge, which laterally slides completely clear of the canal when barges wish to proceed, and is overseen by the adjacent Keadby Canal Junction Signal Box. When you wish to cross, you are instructed to press a button for about three seconds, which, as you can just about hear near the start of the video, sounds a buzzer in the signal box. When this request has been noted, an alarm will sound until an illuminated red light should then extinguish, and when it does so, the alarm will stop, signalling to you that the gate is unlocked and it's safe to cross via the authorised walking route which takes a very unusual path to cross the railway on the bridge. This is assuming no trains are approaching, and if this is the case, the alarm will keep sounding and the gate will remain locked until all approaching trains have passed. Each of the two alarms connected to each gate sound with completely different tones, and additional alarms are also provided, likely for when the bridge is in operation. Two passenger trains feature in this video too, one local stopper to Doncaster and one Transpennine Express service from Liverpool to Cleethorpes. Both were going really slowly due to works on this bridge at a time demanding a 10mph speed restriction be put in place until the works are completed, making it seem more like the trains were moving through a major terminus station rather than this part of the line. This is officially a Temporary Speed Restriction (TSR).
