Melody of China and Francis Wong, "Shanghai Story" (excerpt)

Melody of China performs the World Premiere of Francis Wong's "Shanghai Story" with saxophonist/composer Francis Wong, featuring Wayne Wallace on trombone, Tatsu Aoki on bass and Deszon Claiborne on drums. This clip is an excerpt of Wong's 4-movement work which tells the story of the composer's father growing up in Shanghai in the 1920's and '30's where an intersection of musical cultures took place as jazz and Chinese instruments intermingled. Melody of China performers include: Yangqin Zhao on yangqin (hammered dulcimer), Gangqin Zhao on guzheng (zither), Shenshen Zhang on pipa (lute), Wanpeng Guo on sheng (mouth organ), Xian Lu on dizi (bamboo flute) and Zhang Yu on suona (horn).
