The rich timbre in his voice used to hold audiences spellbound as he deftly wove his magic. His gayaki was known for both the deft touches and his power-packed taans. His compositions as ‘Prem Rang’ are popular even today. With his flair and unique style, Ustadji inspired a new generation of singers. Pt. Nandan Mehta, the great tabla maestro and founding father of Saptak, was not only an extraordinary Tabla virtuoso but also an institution builder. Born into an illustrious family of Ahmedabad which was immersed in the pursuit of art, literature, and culture, his father being the famous Gujarati writer Yashodhar Mehta, it was only natural that he started learning the tabla at a tender age. But it was under the tutelage of Padma Vibhushan Pt. Kishan Maharaj, that he blossomed into one of the great tabla players of the country. It is solely due to his arduous efforts that the Benares Gharana of tabla was firmly established in the state of Gujarat. A hard taskmaster, he was otherwise an extraordinarily kind man, a gem in his human qualities. Besides a host of other awards, the Government of Gujarat as well as the Government of India honored him with the Sangeet Natak academy awards. His untimely death took away so much he still had to offer, but his legacy lives on, through his disciples and his beloved institution, Saptak.
