I had a 14-hour layover in New York, in the middle of the night. Most people stay stranded at the airport. I went out to explore the city when no one was looking. With sub-zero temperatures and a nearly deserted New York, I wandered the city through the night and early morning, visiting very different places: I started at the Chabad Lubavitch headquarters, open 24 hours a day, where I ate for free and even got a glass of vodka. Then I went for a bike ride in -3°C weather, went to the prison where Nicolás Maduro is being held, and took the New York subway in the early hours of the morning. At a subway station, I sang Nessun Dorma, continued on to the Brooklyn Bridge, which I crossed completely alone from end to end (yes, one of the busiest places in the world… and there was nobody there). I continued to the corner of Charly García in Manhattan, passed through the completely empty Times Square, went into the 24-hour Apple Store, walked through Central Park at night, and ended up at Grand Central, from where I returned to the airport to continue my trip to Asia.
