How can we learn to recognize musical notes "by ear"? In this video, we'll take a step forward together in cultivating our ability to perceive and interpret sounds and understand music. We'll do a couple of experiments, hunting for notes with our relative pitch, and we'll discover that with practice, we can learn to do so very quickly and effectively, thanks to musical intervals. In this new, color-remastered version of the video "The Musical Ear," I've used new animations to explain certain concepts more clearly, and I've delved into the controversial nature of the sound of the metal canister, which has two different frequencies (and therefore notes)! In English, perfect pitch is called "perfect pitch," not "absolute pitch," as I mentioned in the video. (Unfortunately, once videos are published, they're set in stone, so there's no way to correct the error.) A brief overview of the difference between relative and absolute pitch: Simply put, relative pitch allows you to recognize a note by listening to it using the sound of another already known note as a reference (listening to it along with the note you want to recognize, or immediately before or after it, or remembering how it sounds from a recent hearing), while absolute pitch allows you to recognize one or more notes without using any other known note or set of notes as a reference. Unlike relative pitch, absolute pitch is more difficult to train and is therefore often described as something mythological, a kind of "gift" that only a few musicians have magically acquired. Some say it's much easier to learn by approaching music at a very young age, and scientifically this can be explained by the fact that our ears, as they are physiologically designed, have the ability to recognize the frequencies of even "isolated" sounds (without an external reference, but using a sort of "internal" reference). In any case, the most widespread opinion (which I fully agree with) is that, as useful, fascinating, and "surprising" as it is for what it allows, perfect pitch is not essential for achieving complete musical awareness and ability. Therefore, if you don't have this "legendary" ability, don't worry! You still have all the credentials to train and develop an excellent relative pitch, which will be a great help in your musical growth!
