Japan's Commanders Sent Tokyo the Wrong Report. Every Single Time.

Tokyo was receiving good news from the Pacific. Victory reports. Progress updates. Confident dispatches from commanders in the field. None of them were accurate. On Guadalcanal, a Japanese commander filed a victory report to Tokyo without looking north. What was happening north of his position would have changed everything he wrote. When Japan's surrender came, three representatives flew three thousand miles to sign the documents. The American general they expected to meet didn't show up. What happened instead was never in any of the reports Tokyo had been receiving. And when a Japanese commander finally received orders he understood — a supply run that should have been routine — he realized in that moment that every report he had ever sent to Tokyo had been wrong. Three commanders. Three reports. Three times the truth was somewhere else entirely.
