Coiffeuse le Jour - Reine du VAUDOU la Nuit | La Vérité sur Marie Laveau

New Orleans, 1850. In a small house on St. Anne Street, a free Black woman receives judges, senators, and Catholic priests. They all come in secret. They all leave convinced that she can solve what the courts and the Church have failed to do. Her name is Marie Laveau. A hairdresser by trade. A voodoo queen by reputation. In an era when Black people had no rights, no protection, no recourse, she became one of the most powerful figures in the American South. Feared by the powerful. Revered by the oppressed. And surrounded by such unsettling rumors that people eventually believed she could not die. More than 140 years after her death, her grave in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 remains one of the most visited in the world. And according to those who leave their vows there, certain things continue to happen. In this investigation, we trace the African roots of Louisiana Voodoo, the childhood of a young Creole girl caught between two heritages, and four possible interpretations of a woman who still defies simple explanations. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ⏱️ IN THIS EPISODE 00:00 — The Ritual of the Tomb 01:40 — The Queen of New Orleans 04:50 — The Gods Who Couldn't Be Chained 10:00 — A City Where Worlds Collide 13:25 — Childhood Between Two Worlds 18:00 — How a Hairdresser Ruled the City 24:10 — Bayou Nights 31:00 — The Tomb That Never Sleeps 37:00 — Four Readings for One Legend ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 📚 SOURCES & FURTHER READING ▸ Encyclopædia Britannica — Definitive biography of Marie Laveau https://www.britannica.com/biography/... ▸ 64 Parishes (Louisiana cultural encyclopedia) — Complete historical record https://64parishes.org/entry/marie-la... ▸ New Orleans Historical — “The Ancestors: Marie Laveau's Tomb” (archives and pilgrimage traditions) https://neworleanshistorical.org/item... ▸ All That's Interesting — “The True Story of Marie Laveau” » https://allthatsinteresting.com/marie... ▸ All That's Interesting — History of the Tomb and Cemetery Rituals https://allthatsinteresting.com/marie... ▸ Ghost City Tours — Marie Laveau and Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1 https://ghostcitytours.com/new-orlean... ▸ History of American Women — Detailed Profile of the Priestess https://www.womenhistoryblog.com/2012... ▸ Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1 — Official Guided Tours and Preservation Website https://cemeterytourneworleans.com/3-... ▸ Reference Works: — Martha Ward, Voodoo Queen: The Spirited Lives of Marie Laveau (University Press of Mississippi) — Ina J.
