This is because brown fundamentally works to connect an entire outfit, as it complements many other colors, offsetting any bright tones you may be using elsewhere in your outfit. Brown, in particular, pairs especially well with one of the other base tones in menswear, blue. In fact, we've made an entire video on how to pair blue and brown, which you can find here. That video contains a more detailed analysis of why blue and brown go so well together, but in general terms, it's because blue and orange are on opposite sides of the color wheel, acting as complementary colors, and since brown often contains orange tones, it pairs equally well with blue. Secondly, because both blue and brown come in a wide variety of shades, it should be easy to find shades of both colors that work well for you—but more on that in a moment. Similar to how brown pairs well with blue, it can also pair well with the other base color, gray. And, in fact, we've also made a video on that topic, which you'll find here. While this combination is a little less conventional, as long as you're looking to combine formality and seasonality in garments, you can easily combine brown and gray, and you'll be good to go. For example, gray flannel pants paired with a tweed jacket with brown undertones will fit nicely into the smart-casual category for the fall or winter season. And once again, in our video on the rules you should ignore, you can implement brown and black very well together, as long as they harmonize both in terms of formality and intensity. And yet another color that brown pairs especially well with is green. This is perhaps due to how frequently both colors are seen together in nature. As an added bonus, it's a good idea to make sure the shades of brown along with any other colors you're using—be it blue, gray, or another color—harmonize well with your skin tone. For example, lighter skin tones will look best with lighter or paler shades of brown, while darker skin tones will look best with a dark charcoal brown and a white shirt to create a strong contrast. Medium skin tones could also benefit from a little contrast, though perhaps not to the same degree.
