[2026/6/17] Day 2 of the Chuetsu Expedition Started fishing at Nozumi Surf before 4 AM. Many anglers were fishing for Japanese whiting, but no one I could see was catching anything (I wasn't catching anything either). Unlike my last fishing trip, there was absolutely no sign of fish. I thought it was going to be a tough day, but then I hooked a sole while retrieving my lure near the shore! It chased the lure and then got spooked! I could see it clearly, and it was a sole—maybe it was a flounder in a past life? It was moving like a fish-eater! My Chuetsu expedition was supposed to be about fishing, but the tough conditions at Nozumi broke my spirit, so I moved to my home beach, Joetsu Surf, for a midday fishing trip. Targeting flathead using only Salut jigs! The reason I started baitcasting was to catch flathead with Salut jigs! I started surf baitcasting this year for that reason, so I feel like the time has finally come! The wind was strong, and it would have been much better to throw jigs, but I persevered and continued fishing, and just like yesterday, I hooked a scorpionfish! (Release) After that, I probably lost a flathead, so my first flathead on baitcasting was unsuccessful lol (the drag was too loose, so I couldn't hook it, something to reflect on). The wind picked up, making it difficult to cast, so I gave up and finished fishing lol. I moved around looking for a spot with less wind, and ended up in Itoigawa for afternoon fishing. I switched to spinning tackle and, like last time, was targeting rockfish. There was a bait ball, so I wondered if there were any predators? While casting, I got a strong bite! I thought, "Could it be?" and at that moment I saw a dolphin's dorsal fin, and it seemed like the dolphin touched my line. I was terrified and my motivation to fish instantly disappeared lol. While still scared of the dolphin, I tried targeting the bait ball and ended up catching a baitfish lol. It was a sardine (auto-release). Even so, I wonder how long the sardines will stay around? I'd like to give myself a pat on the back for visiting three locations in Chuetsu, Joetsu, and Itoigawa and not getting skunked at any of them (regardless of the type of fish caught). #fishing #fishing #shorejigging #surf #Toyama #NiigataFishing
