Formed in 1935 in Lubbock, Texas, by patriarch David P. "Dad" Carter alongside his children—son Ernest "Jim" and daughters Lola "Rose" and Effie "Anna"—the group began as the Carter Quartet on local radio station KFYO. Their breakthrough came in 1936 when they were sponsored by Bewley Flour Mills, adopting the "Chuck Wagon Gang" name and earning $60 a week to sing on powerful station WBAP in Fort Worth. Quickly rising to fame, they signed with Columbia Records that same year, launching a legendary 39-year partnership that set a world record for label longevity (until surpassed by Johnny Mathis in 2000). As Columbia's top-selling group, they moved over 39 million records, filling venues like Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Grand Ole Opry while influencing icons such as Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. Enduring countless lineup changes—while always honoring family ties—the Gang has sold millions more through songbooks and recordings, earning spots in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Smithsonian Institution's Americana collection. Today, under the stewardship of Shaye Smith (granddaughter of original alto Anna Carter), the quartet—featuring soprano Melissa Kemper, tenor Josh Garner, guitarist Nick Poe, and bassist Roger Newman—preserves their signature four-part harmonies backed by a lone guitar, now signed to Thoroughbred Records to blend tradition with fresh bluegrass-gospel explorations. As broadcaster Dan Rather once said, they echo "an America that was, and a reminder of how important the values of that America remain." In this full studio album performance of Made to Live Forever, witness the Chuck Wagon Gang's enduring spirit come alive—timeless faith, family, and songcraft that have defined gospel music since the days of chuck wagons and dusty radios. 0:00 – The Chuck Wagon Gang Introduction 4:13 – The Sooner The Better - The Chuck Wagon Gang 8:38 – Made To Live Forever - The Chuck Wagon Gang 15:59 – Plans - The Chuck Wagon Gang 19:30 – When All I Can Cry Is Holy - The Chuck Wagon Gang 27:19 – Go Spread The Gospel - The Chuck Wagon Gang 33:37– Died For Us - The Chuck Wagon Gang
