When Cascade Timber Holdings clear-cut 5,000 acres around Owen Marsh's family tree farm in Wahkiakum County, Washington, they planted orange survey flags on four of his trees. Owen, thirteen, had seven years of planting notebooks tracking every tree by tag number, including trees 214, 219, 223, and 231. Forester Ruth Pickett identified a 63-foot error in Cascade's DNR boundary data. Surveyor Dave Colton confirmed the 1987 Marsh monuments on site. When Cascade's operations manager arrived Monday, Owen walked him to tree 214 and read the planting entry aloud. The manager picked up his radio. The DNR corrected the boundary. The flags came down.
