On ne se construit que dans la solitude - Dialogue avec Dominique Fernandez
Loneliness is frightening. When endured and handled poorly, it becomes isolating and can make us deeply unhappy. But it also represents inner freedom, and according to Dominique Fernandez, writer and academic, essential personal hygiene. Dominique Fernandez's book: https://www.fnac.com/a21560565/Domini... In a world where, since its inception, the individual has been built through his or her connections to others, isn't the solitary an anomaly of nature? Just as a person is born and dies alone, their lives are usually spent trying not to be alone anymore. And yet, as Pascal said, human unhappiness stems from one thing: not being able to remain alone, at rest in a room. From Seneca to Tolstoy, from Rousseau to Stendhal, this essay by Dominique Fernandez explores the many faces of solitude through the works and lives of philosophers, artists, and writers. Philosophical, sacred, bourgeois, or tragic solitudes: each reveals a way of being in the world. This text specifically highlights examples of solitary figures in three great artists: the contemplative man, apart from the group, in Tiepolo; the bourgeois and hieratic figures in Seurat; and the battered, flightless airplane, representing tragic melancholy in Anselm Kiefer. At the end of this thought-provoking essay, the question is posed: is solitude a moral duty or an act of irresponsibility? In the footsteps of Montaigne, Dominique Fernandez offers this precious precept to his reader: be a world unto yourself.
