The Blessing of 'Bay Guardian' at NSRI Gqeberha

Commissioned this past May, Bay Guardian is the latest rescue vessel at NSRI Station 6 in Gqeberha — purpose-built for extreme maritime operations. Locally constructed in Cape Town, this 14.8-metre self-righting vessel has already proven her worth with 15 rescue missions, 52 operational hours, and eight urgent medical evacuations. Designed to carry up to 23 survivors and six rescuers in high-speed, shock-mitigating seats, Bay Guardian represents a leap forward in rescue capability. She also carries a powerful tribute: 739 names inscribed through the NSRI’s “Celebrate a Life” initiative, raising over R700,000 for her build and honouring loved ones with every mission. Hear from Station Commander Justin Erasmus and NSRI CEO Mike Vonk as they reflect on the impact this vessel has already made — on both rescue operations and the hearts of the community who helped bring her to life. #NSRI #RescueBoat #BayGuardian #MaritimeRescue #CelebrateALife #SouthAfrica
