Among the approximately 2100 Sumiyoshi shrines nationwide, the three shrines known as the "Great Sumiyoshi Shrines" are: Sumiyoshi Taisha, the Ichinomiya (first-ranked shrine) of Settsu Province, Osaka; Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture Sumiyoshi Shrine, the Ichinomiya (first-ranked shrine) of Chikuzen Province, Hakata; Sumiyoshi-ku, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture Sumiyoshi Shrine, the Ichinomiya (first-ranked shrine) of Nagato Province, Shimonoseki; Ichinomiya Sumiyoshi, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture At Sumiyoshi Shrine, the Ichinomiya (first-ranked shrine) of Nagato Province, Shimonoseki, a special ritual is performed annually. During this period, the shrine gate is closed, a sacred rope (shimenawa) is stretched around the grounds, and all the priests seclude themselves inside to perform a secret ritual. The same Wakame ritual is performed at Wakame Shrine on the opposite shore, where Seoritsuhime, the "Goddess of the Moon," is enshrined.
