Breast Implant Illness 2020 UPDATE | Brown Plastic Surgery
We're talking about Breast Implant Illness and what you need to know in 2020! Follow my other channel for new plastic surgery content: https://www.youtube.com/@doctorrickym... To start, anyone who watches this who has Bii should know this is a video in support of you not against you. I explant 10-15 patients a month. I believe that there is a subset of women who are clearly being made sick by their implants. Since our last video, there has been an FDA hearing and we're making progress towards understanding Breast Implant Illness and accepting it as a true diagnosis. At this point, however, we still don't have a test that would allow us to predict who would get sick before having a breast augmentation. To clarify, we can test someone to see if they are allergic to different foods. We cannot test to see if you'll be allergic to implants. At this point, it's being talked about as if it's an auto-immune issue and that makes sense to me. The next step from the clinical field is to design research that would allow us to test not only who is at risk for Bii, but if there is a family history or anything else that would make someone have a higher risk. This would allow us to talk with patients and have a real conversation about whether or not a breast augmentation would be right for them. We talk with all of our patients about the risks associated with breast augmentation and Breast Implant Illness is definitely one of them. I still believe that they are safe for most women and can be viewed as an allergy. Not everyone is going to have a peanut allergy. Not every woman is going to have a reaction to implants. We have had cases where we've learned about a patient's history with auto-immune issues and decided not to perform the augmentation. We stand by people with Breast Implant Illness and support them if they want to have them removed. The purpose of this conversation is to open dialogue and help everyone be more informed from all sides. Richard Brown is a top plastic surgeon in Sun City and Scottsdale, Arizona.
