Train on the river Ghaghara
The film captures the Meter Guage (MG) trains of the North Eastern Railway in action on the Bahraich to Mailani and Bahraich to Nepalganj Road sections. The route has a rich and intricate history. The line that we see today didn’t exist as a single unified system in the past. The saga of this line starts with the Bengal and Northwestern Railway, which proposed the building of the Patna Bahraich rail link. Construction on the project was started in 1882 from Sonepur, and the line till Bahraich via Gonda was completed in 1891. In 1893, a further extension till Nanpara from Bahraich and Nepalganj was opened for service. Further, in 1896 the line from Nanpara was extended up to Mihimpurwa and then in the year 1898 till Katarnia Ghat. Thus, making Katarnia ghat a terminus. On the other side of the river Ghagra, Rohilkhand and Kumaun railway company operated a meter gauge railway that ran between Kodiala ghat and Mailani. In 1892, the line from Mailani was extended Palia, and in the year 1894, the line reached Sonaripur. After that the Sonaripur- Kodiala ghat line was completed in the year 1911. In the year 1943, all the railway companies in this region were merged to form the Oudh and Tiruth Railway. Subsequently, after India gained independence, the Oudh and Tiruth Railway was succeeded by the present-day North Eastern Railway. However, the story does not finish here. There was still no through train service across the banks of the Ghagra, and commuters used to rely on ferries. During the 70s, it was proposed to build a barrage over the river Ghagra and a railway cum road bridge. In 1976, this barrage was opened for service and the Kodiala and Katarnia ghat lines were joined to make a continuous route from Gonda all the way to Mailani.
