Queen Máxima visited the Taal aan Zee Foundation in The Hague on Wednesday afternoon. This foundation offers Dutch lessons to women who speak other languages, refugees, and asylum seekers. This year, Taal aan Zee is celebrating its tenth anniversary. More than 330 volunteers provide educational activities for approximately 1,400 students each year. Taal aan Zee offers lessons at its central location, but also at vulnerable non-native speakers' homes or in neighborhoods at schools and community centers. Taal aan Zee also collaborates with The Hague Library under the "Language in the Library" project, and language buddies go out together. Language lessons strengthen self-reliance and lower the barrier to participation in society. Queen Máxima attended various Taal aan Zee educational activities, such as a reading lesson and a lesson for visually impaired non-native speakers. She also learned more about the language buddies and received an explanation of the "Language in the Library" project. Afterwards, Queen Máxima spoke with language coaches and (former) Taal aan Zee students about the benefits of the language lessons. The visit will conclude with the signing of a partnership agreement between Taal aan Zee and Gymnasium Haganum. Gymnasium Haganum organizes citizenship activities for students, and Taal aan Zee is one of the partners. The goal is to introduce students to volunteering at an early age.
