Ukraine; Chernihiv; River Station | UA: Chernihiv; River Station The Chernihiv River Station is a former passenger terminal on the banks of the Desna River. The surviving building is part of a larger river port system and serves as a reminder of the period when water transport played an important role in the life of Chernihiv. It should be viewed primarily as a historical landmark on the riverbank, rather than as an active transportation hub. The history of shipping in this area dates back several centuries. The city pier was renovated and significantly expanded in 1860 at the foot of the historic Vala. It served passenger ships, cargo vessels, and barges transporting various goods along the Desna. The first major river station opened in 1935. It was a two-story building with a waiting room, a café, and a restaurant. In the early 1950s, a second terminal, shaped like a ship, was built. Passenger ships traveled from Chernihiv to Kyiv, and later, hydrofoils became an important part of river navigation. The surviving river terminal building was built in the early 1980s. Its futuristic design and blue façade make it an unusual example of late Soviet architecture. The port gradually fell into disrepair, and its main commercial activity effectively ceased in 2012. The pier was occasionally used for pleasure boat rides on the Desna River.
