The probable cause of the fire: apparently a technical defect, according to the police. A refugee shelter in Schmölln, Thuringia, was attacked with pyrotechnics. The perpetrators were unknown. A 21-year-old from a village in the Meißen district is suspected of planning an arson attack on a refugee shelter. A special task force has arrested the man. Media across Germany have reported extensively on these three cases in recent weeks and months. What no one knew until now: Firstly, that these three cases are related to one another. Three of the suspected perpetrators are members of a right-wing extremist chat group called "Last Wave of Defense," in which children and young people become radicalized – and some of them prepare or discuss attacks. And secondly, that police and public prosecutors only learned about the alleged attack plan on the refugee shelter in Brandenburg through the investigations of RTL and Stern. And also the true background to the fire in Altdöbern. They are now no longer talking about a technical defect, but rather the suspicion of serious arson. Federal intelligence agencies are alarmed. "We are observing that more and more young people are joining right-wing extremist groups," says Dirk Müller, head of Brandenburg's Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
