We can differentiate: 1. Hydrogenated functions: Hydrocarbons. These are substances that are only formed by carbon and hydrogen. They can be open or closed chains. In turn, they can be saturated (only have single bonds) or unsaturated (contain double or triple bonds). 2. Oxygenated functions. The molecule contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. These are: alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, and salts. 3. Nitrogenated functions. Molecules are made up of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen atoms, and sometimes oxygen. These are: amines, amides, nitriles, and nitro derivatives.
