Sri Lankan Ancient Kithul Knife Making Technology

This is a knife which uses to make a delicate cut in the jaggery palm flowers, when extracting sweet toddy. It doesn't matter how experienced is the farmer, if the cut is not perfect because of the unsuitable knife, the sweet toddy is not produced. So in order to obtain the desired properties, the blade is made by carbon steel with the right percentage of carbon, and the knife has to go through a special heat treatment process. Even the tools and equipment have been evolved recently, which makes the production time lesser, but the technology is known for centuries. The knowledge has been transferred generation to generation, but few families are still in the operation keeping the age old industry alive. මෙය තෙලිජ්ජ ලබා ගැනීම සඳහා කිතුල් මලෙහි සියුම් කැපුමක් යෙදීමට භාවිතා කරන පිහියකි. කොතරම් පළපුරුදුකම් ඇති අයෙකුට වුවත් නිසි ලෙස සකස් නොකෙරූ පිහියකින් යොදන ලද කැපුමකින් තෙලිජ්ජ ලබා ගත නොහැක. නිවැරදි ගුණාංග සහිත පිහියක් නිපදවීමට නම් ප්‍රශස්ත අනුපාතයකට කාබන් අඩංගු වානේ යොදාගත යුතු අතර සුවිශේෂී වූ තාප පිරියම් කිරීමේ ක්‍රියාවලියක් අනුගමනය කල යුතුය. පිහිය සෑදීම සඳහා භාවිතා කරන උපකරණ මෑතක දී සීග්‍ර ලෙස වර්ධනය වී ඇතත්, මෙම තාක්ෂණය සියවස් ගණනාවක් දක්වා විහිදේ. තාක්ෂණික දැනුම පරම්පරාවෙන් පරම්පරාවට සම්ප්‍රේෂණය වෙමින් පැවත මේ වන විට පවුල් කිහිපයක් විසින් දිනෙන් දින අභාවයට යන මෙම කර්මාන්තයෙහි නියැලෙමින් සිටි.
