How to use colored joining slip in a ceramic slab vase
In this video, we build a ceramic slab vase and explore how colored joining slip can become part of the design. The slabs are securely joined from the inside to make sure the structure is strong and fully connected. On the outside, I intentionally leave the slip line visible — allowing the colored slip between the slabs to become a defining design element rather than something hidden. For this piece, I used green, red, and yellow slip. To make the colored slips, I mixed: 40g clay + 10g stain, then gradually added water to thin the mixture into a smooth, brushable slip. All three colors were made using the same ratio. This slab building process shows how slip in ceramics can function as more than adhesive. It becomes structure, surface, and visual rhythm. The vase is built from slabs, assembled with colored joining slip, and revealed after firing to show how the color settles into the clay. If you work with slab pottery or are interested in using colored slip as a design element in ceramic work, this approach may offer a new perspective. thanks for watching If you found this video interesting, any form of support is truly appreciated. — Ba+Fa
