Real Rural China: Why My 84-Year-Old Grandpa Still Waits in the Wheat Fields

Modern machines harvest the wheat now. But in my village in China, the people still waiting in the fields are mostly elderly. These days, I went back to my village with my mother to harvest our family’s wheat. At first, I thought machines would make everything simple: drive in, cut the wheat, pour the grain into bags, and go home. But after waiting in the field for several days, I realized the machine only solves one part. It cannot replace the waiting, the worrying, or the older generation’s connection to the land. Some footage in this video is from another family’s field in our village while I was helping them. Some is from my own family’s harvest. I kept it this way because this is what wheat harvest really looked like here. Our family harvested around 4,000 jin of wheat, about 2,000 kg / 4,400 lb. The price was about 1.18 yuan per jin, so the total was a little over 4,700 RMB, roughly $690. This is not a video about agricultural technology.
