We produce a lot of garbage every day. Each person produces 880 grams of waste per day, which amounts to 40.34 million tons per year across Japan. Disposal of this waste costs 17,000 yen per person, totaling 2.1 trillion yen in tax revenue nationwide. However, a more serious problem is looming. Landfills across Japan are expected to reach their capacity in about 20 years, leaving waste with nowhere to go. As a solution, "waste sorting" is now required, but there is also a serious labor shortage in collection workers, making the "waste problem" more serious by the minute. Ota Ward, Tokyo, has launched a "plastic sorting" initiative. As collection work increases, labor shortages become a problem. We follow one railway company that has stepped up to solve the problem by reducing waste and streamlining collection.
