It can be said that Japanese history was formed within this context. Although the term "Marxism" is rarely heard directly today, its remnants certainly remain. It forms the basis of the historical views of many academic societies, and as a result, even young researchers today are unconsciously being led in a particular direction. Therefore, I strongly felt that an academic society with a different historical perspective had to be created—a society that would form and discuss a new Japanese national history based on a Japanese historical perspective different from materialistic economic history and class struggle history. To be an academic society that aims to re-recognize the value of traditionally specialized and fragmented research by comparing and contrasting it with that of other countries and fields, and to reconstruct Japanese national history. In line with the above objective, to be an academic society that does not limit itself to a specific era or region, but allows research from various perspectives, and provides a forum for mutual understanding and verification of the continuity and consistency of history. To be an academic society that publishes high-quality, creative papers in its journal, allows for the presentation of new insights, and is open to everyone. The Chagan Collection Opher Chagan's Collection Opher Chagan is a businessman who has been living in Japan since 1989. His passion for art and antiques extends beyond traveling throughout Asia to collect magnificent works; he has also written books on his collection from various perspectives and organized exhibitions at major Japanese museums. "Shunga," a form of Japanese art, is unique among traditional art worldwide for its erotic subject matter, deviating from religious contexts. Chagan began collecting shunga when he first moved to Japan. The uniqueness of shunga lies in its depiction of erotic subjects, not solely intended to stimulate the viewer's sexual desires. Rather, artists actively used eroticism to convey and express social ideas such as humor, parody, criticism, and gossip. The Chagan Collection is known as the world's largest and most impressive collection of shunga. The collection currently comprises over 12,000 items (including more than 70,000 paintings), including approximately 7,000 ukiyo-e prints in various sizes (small, medium, and large), over 4,000 Edo period books, over 400 original hanging scrolls, sculptures, ceramics, and netsuke. In his collection, Mr. Shagan not only gathered traditional paintings by famous artists such as Hishikawa Moronobu, Nishikawa Sukenobu, Tsukioka Settei, Katsushika Hokusai, Kitagawa Utamaro, Katsukawa Shuncho, Utagawa Kunisada, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and Kawanabe Kyōsai, but also believed that a thorough understanding of Japanese history and culture could not be achieved without deciphering the hidden messages in shunga (erotic prints). He has therefore focused particularly on finding shunga containing such important social messages.
