The Temple is burned down, the walls torn down. The people are deported. Only the poorest remain, cultivating vineyards and fields. The Temple, the center of faith, lies in ruins. 📖 Reading from the Second Book of Kings 2 Kings 25:1-12 In the ninth year of King Zedekiah's reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, advanced with his entire army before Jerusalem and besieged it. A siege wall was built all around it. Until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah's reign, the city was besieged. On the ninth day of the fourth month, famine had become severe in the city, and the citizens of the land had no bread. At that time, breaches were made in the city wall. All the warriors left the city at night through the gate between the two walls, which leads out to the royal garden, even though the Chaldeans were encircling the city. The king went in the direction of the Arabah. But the Chaldean troops pursued the king and overtook him in the lowlands of Jericho, after all his troops had deserted him and scattered. The king was seized and taken to Riblah, to the king of Babylon, who pronounced judgment on him. Zedekiah's sons were slaughtered before his eyes. He had Zedekiah blinded, bound, and taken to Babylon. On the seventh day of the fifth month—that is, in the nineteenth year of King Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon—Nebuzaradan, commander of the guard and servant of the king of Babylon, entered Jerusalem and set fire to the house of the Lord, the royal palace, and all the houses in Jerusalem. He burned every large house to the ground. The Chaldean troops under the command of the guard also tore down the walls of Jerusalem. Nebuzaradan, commander of the guard, took into exile the remaining inhabitants of the city, as well as all those who had defected to the king of Babylon and the rest of the crowd. Only a portion of the poor people in the land were left behind by the guard commander to work as vintners and farmers. ✨ Selected Scripture Verse “On the seventh day of the fifth month, he burned down the house of the Lord.” (2 Kings 25:9) ✝️ Reflection The temple burns—God’s house in ruins. And yet: God remains. He is not bound to buildings. Even from ashes, he can create something new.
