PSALM 111 — "His Righteousness Endures Forever" | Psalm Selah

The first of the Egyptian Hallel psalms, sung at Passover. An acrostic hymn celebrating God's great works, his faithfulness to the covenant, and the beginning of wisdom found in the fear of the LORD. ⚡ QUICK ANSWER Psalm 111 is a praise psalm celebrating God's wonderful works, his righteous dealings, and the covenant he remembers forever — themes that anchor the Passover celebration and point to God's faithfulness in redemption. 📖 SCRIPTURE — PSALM 111 (Berean Standard Bible) 1 Praise the LORD! I will praise the LORD with all my heart in the assembly of the upright and in the congregation. 2 Great are the works of the LORD, studied by all who delight in them. 3 His work is splendor and majesty, and His righteousness endures forever. 4 He has caused His wonderful works to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and merciful. 5 He has given food to those who fear Him; He remembers His covenant forever. 6 He has shown His people the power of His works, in giving them the heritage of the nations. 7 The works of His hands are truth and justice; all His precepts are trustworthy. 8 They are established forever and ever, done in truth and uprightness. 9 He has sent redemption to His people; He has ordained His covenant forever. Holy and awesome is His name. 10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow His precepts have good understanding. His praise endures forever. 🔍 ABOUT PSALM 111 Psalm 111 is an acrostic psalm—each line begins with successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet, a mnemonic device for memorization. (Psalm 119 is the most famous extended acrostic; Psalm 111 is a shorter example.) The psalm is designed to be sung at the Passover festival, where its celebration of God's redemptive works and covenant faithfulness aligns with the annual commemoration of the Exodus. The phrase "His righteousness endures forever" (verse 3) anchors the entire psalm: God's works are not arbitrary or temporary, but established in eternal justice. Verse 5—"He remembers His covenant forever"—connects Psalm 111 directly to the Passover story: God remembered his covenant with Abraham and redeemed Israel from Egypt. The final verse teaches a foundational truth: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom." "Fear" here means awe-filled reverence, not terror. True understanding begins when we recognize God's authority and trustworthiness. Psalm 111 invites listeners into the communal memory of God's faithfulness and calls the assembly to praise. ⏱ TIMESTAMPS 0:00 Intro — praise the lord 0:36 Verse 1 — in the council of the upright 0:54 Pre-Chorus — his work is honour and majesty 1:14 Chorus — he has given food to those who fear him 1:42 Verse 2 — the works of his hands are truth and justice 2:02 Bridge — he has sent redemption to his people 2:15 Verse 3 — the fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom 2:47 Final Chorus — the lord's works are great 3:12 Outro — praise the lord forever 🎧 LISTEN EVERYWHERE Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6cNRu...
