La Nera: inside a striking black box house in Italy - House Tour by Studio Scaramucci
House “La Nera”, Studio Scaramucci, Castel di Lama (Ascoli Piceno, Italy) This contemporary “black box” residence is located in Castel di Lama, a town in the Marche region of central Italy, within the province of Ascoli Piceno. Set within a micro-industrial context, the house occupies a site previously developed with a 1950s building. Defined by clean lines and an essential architectural language, the project embraces a minimalist design approach that prioritizes space, structure, and functionality over decorative elements. The entrance is approached through a tree-lined driveway framed by a bamboo grove, creating a striking and immersive arrival experience. Beyond the threshold, visitors are welcomed into a double-height open-plan living space where the interplay between expansive and compressed volumes generates a distinctive spatial dynamic. The ground floor features a split-level living area, with the kitchen serving as the social heart of the home, encouraging interaction between the different living zones. Freestanding furniture was deliberately selected to preserve the flexibility and adaptability of the interiors. Exposed reinforced concrete and thermally treated oak flooring contribute to an authentic, handcrafted aesthetic, while intentionally visible building services add character and reinforce the home’s contemporary industrial identity. The main façade, crafted from laminated oak by a local artisan, reflects the project's attention to detail and strong connection to regional craftsmanship traditions. On the upper level, the private sleeping area accommodates two bedrooms: the primary suite, oriented toward the mountains surrounding Ascoli Piceno, and a children's bedroom featuring canopy beds designed as playful, imaginative spaces. Bespoke glazing systems and custom-made furniture, produced by a local carpenter, further enhance the warmth, functionality, and uniqueness of the interiors. Externally, the main volume is finished with a black heat-reflective render, while the southern elevation introduces a vibrant explosion of color. This portion of the house intentionally challenges formal consistency through the use of bold pop-inspired colors and expressive detailing. Designed for long-term flexibility, the building can easily transition from a private residence to a studio or workshop with minimal alterations, embodying the spirit of the evolutionary architecture movement of the 1970s.
