Dirty Drivin' - Arcade Off Road Racing Game (2011)
Dirty Drivin' is an arcade offroad racing game with elements of vehicle combat mixed in. The game was developed by Specular Interactive and published to arcades by Raw Thrills in 2011. Players battled it out with an assortment of weaponized vehicles, tasked with wiping opponents off the track in a bid to win the race. The first thing that might come to mind upon playing this game is the classic Twisted Metal series, given its strong emphasis on vehicle combat. although, Dirty Drivin is a lot more linear, in stark contrast to Twisted Metal's open-world battle environments. The weapons too are quite limited in this game. Every track has an off road theme, with players racing on an assortment of dirt, mud, and snow covered tracks. Weapon power-ups appear as a gear icon scattered throughout each race, along with crates that increase score and can even double the strength of your power-ups (such as firing an extra missile to take out multiple opponents with a single shot). Pulling a crank with a skull unleashes your weapons. Besides using standards weapons, players can also ram their opponents to wipe them out. Likewise, the AI opponents in the game tend to be super aggressive, and they will do everything in their power to slow you down. The player's vehicle can also perform a double-jump by hitting the jump button twice, often sending them hurling high into the air. Although, the smaller, lighter vehicles tend to catch more air on jumps than the heavier, bulkier vehicles do. A lot of the game's power-ups float high up in the air, and some move around, often making it a challenge for players to double-jump at the right time and catch them. Also, there's ramps that players must jump over, and missing the ramps can cause you to fall into numerous pits in the game, setting you further back in the race. This isn't your typical racing game, as winning the race often depends upon how many power-ups you obtain during the race, how effectively you make use of your weapons, and how many opponents you manage ram off the track. The game is really less about racing than it is your strategy with weapons when it comes to actually beating the race. Weapons include a gatling gun, land mines, missiles, as well as a power-up that transforms your vehicle into a mini version of itself, that also happens to be faster and more powerful when it comes to ramming your opponents off the course. Race Tracks: Volcano Island Brawlaseum Revenge of The Nile Iron Circuit Lost City Swissted Twister Thunder Mesa All tracks can be flipped and played in reverse as well, giving the game some added replay value. The tracks have some interesting themes and props too, such as gigantic T-Rex's that dart out across the screen in the Volcano Island stage, and they really look compelling. There's also a bonus round at the end of each race called "Yank The Crank", where players pull a skull shaped crank in a bid to win a starting power-up for the following race.
