In his poem "Hollow Men," T.S. Eliot doesn't depict a world filled with tyrants, monsters, or criminals. He paints something far more terrifying and serene: A human being who has gradually lost his essence without even realizing it. Humans: Speak without a true voice Move without will Believe without faith And live lives that have lost their inner warmth. Here, the tragedy isn't a great explosion, But a slow erosion of meaning, spirit, and the capacity for genuine feeling. From this point, Eliot approaches, with astonishing clarity, the world of the "outsider": The human being who has partially awakened to the fragility of the world, But hasn't yet found the path to a higher consciousness or a more fulfilling life. Eliot's pessimism isn't a nihilistic cry, Nor a call to despair, But a weary diagnosis of a civilization: That has lost the warmth of faith, Truth, And Spirit, While still clinging to outward forms and rituals.
