Leixões & Porto Cruise Terminal: One EPIC day in Porto, Portugal - Secret Viewpoint, Tips & More!

Blog post for this video: https://www.nowgoseeit.com/blog/cruis... Watch more videos from our European Cities series:    • European Cities   Cruising to Portugal? This video is your ultimate guide to visiting Porto from the Leixões Cruise Port. We’re covering everything you need to know to plan a day in Porto—how to get from the cruise terminal to the city center, what to see, where to eat, and how to make the most of your time. Whether you're traveling on your own or with a shore excursion, this guide walks you through a one-day itinerary that hits Porto’s highlights with real-world tips based on our visit. We start the day at the Port of Leixões. The port itself has a striking, futuristic building right at the entrance. If you’re on a larger ship, odds are you’ll be docking at the new cruise terminal just outside the city. Our cruise line provided a free shuttle to Vila Nova de Gaia, which is right across the river from Porto’s historic center. It took about 40 minutes to get into town. Once we arrived in Vila Nova de Gaia, we were greeted with panoramic views of the Douro River and the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge. The lower level is packed with port wine cellars and riverfront cafés, but to reach the heart of Porto you’ll want to head up to the pedestrian-only upper deck of the bridge. We took the Gaia Cable Car (Teleférico de Gaia) to get to the top, and the views were worth every second. Crossing the upper level of the Dom Luís I Bridge, you’ll see some of the best views of Porto’s tiled buildings, hillside homes, and riverside boats. From there, we dove straight into the historic city center to see some of Porto’s most famous sights. Our first stop was Clérigos Tower, one of the tallest and most recognizable structures in the city. If you have time and energy, you can climb it—but the exterior alone is worth checking out. We continued through the streets of Baixa, Porto’s central district, where you’ll find Livraria Lello—one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world and a must-see stop for fans of literature or architecture. Be warned: timed tickets are required, and the line moves slow. We recommend booking ahead and showing up early. Next, we headed to Rua das Flores, a pedestrian shopping street filled with locally owned boutiques, gift shops, and a few places to grab a quick bite. This is where you’ll find unique home goods, Portuguese ceramics, and fashion that’s a step above typical tourist fare. Our lunch stop was the Mercado Beira-Rio back in Gaia—a food hall packed with regional vendors serving everything from francesinha sandwiches to seafood dishes and Portuguese pastries. It’s busy but manageable, and you can sample a variety of local flavors without committing to a full sit-down meal. Later in the day, we checked out the Time Out Market Porto, which is smaller than the one in Lisbon but still worth a visit. It’s ideal if you’re looking for a clean restroom, snacks, or a last-minute gift before heading back to the shuttle. We wrapped up with one more ride on the Gaia cable car to enjoy the sunset and took some time to explore the riverfront area on foot. If you still have time before returning to the Leixões Cruise Terminal, grab a glass of port wine at one of the nearby cellars, or visit MMIPO, the Museum of the Misericórdia of Porto, which houses a collection of religious art and artifacts in a beautifully restored building.
