He displayed talent in ballet from a young age, and despite his poor family background, he entered the Kyiv National Ballet School. In 2003, at the age of 13, he entered the Royal Ballet School in England with the support of the Rudolf Nureyev Foundation. After leaving the Royal Ballet, he was invited by the renowned Russian dancer Igor Zelensky to become a principal dancer at the Stanislavsky-Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre (Moscow Musical Theatre Ballet) and the Novosibirsk State Opera and Ballet. He is also a "Permanent Guest Artist" at the Bavarian State Ballet (Munich Ballet), where Zelensky serves as artistic director. He currently runs "Project Polunin," an organization supporting dancers. In March 2017, he produced a performance titled "Project Polunin" at the same theatre. He also has film appearances lined up, including Kenneth Branagh's "Murder on the Orient Express" starring Johnny Depp, "Red Sparrow" starring Jennifer Lawrence, and Ralph Fiennes' biographical film about Nureyev, "The White Crow."
