A child had to let go of her mother while struggling to find help after the ship they were on sank. The KLM Nurul Salsa sank in the waters west of Polassi Island, Bontosikuyu District, Selayar Islands. The ship sank while sailing from Jampea Island, Passimasunggu District, to Rauf Rahman Port, Benteng, the capital of Selayar, on Wednesday (July 15, 2026). Diska Yanti, 8 years old, is experiencing deep sorrow. She lost her mother, Melida (31), who died on a life jacket while trying to survive the sinking of the KLM Nurul Salsa. Initially, Diska Yanti was held by her mother, Melida, and her father, Hasbi (41), who remained inseparable from her after she fell into the water when the KLM Nurul Salsa sank. They clung to the KLM Nurul Salsa's cork life jacket after the ship sank. They were with six other passengers on the cork life jacket. As Wednesday night approached, the waves became increasingly strong, hitting them. Her father's grip on her mother loosened, and they were separated. Diska Yanti remained with her mother on the cork life jacket. She and the other passengers were swept away by the high waves, already quite far from the ship's sinking site. By the third day, Diska's mother had exhausted her ability to stay afloat. "His life couldn't be saved. He couldn't stay afloat. Poor thing," said Diska's uncle, Andi Samad, a victim and one of the life preservers in the incident, when recounting the incident to Selayar Regent HM Natsir Ali on Sunday (July 19, 2026). Diska's mother did not survive and was left at sea, dead. Entering the fourth day, the five of them on the cork buoy were still struggling to find help. Their voices were hoarse, screaming for help. But no fishing boats passed by. On Saturday (July 18, 2026), nearing dusk, one of the passengers on the cork buoy took a mirror from their small bag. Hoping that the mirror would reflect sunlight back to the fishing boat, the boat was rescued. Shortly thereafter, the fishing boat Sinar Mattoangin 04 from Bulukumba Regency found the victims adrift in the Flores Sea. They were then rescued on the boat. The crew of the Sinar Mattoangin then reported the discovery to the ship's owner in Bulukumba, H. Ahmad. He then reported it to Indonesian House of Representatives member Andi Iwan Darmawan Aras. He then reported the discovery to Basarnas Makassar. The victim has now arrived at Khayyung Selayar Regional Hospital to receive medical treatment due to his weak condition.
