C.S. Lewis, Out of the Silent Planet, Lecture 1
This lecture begins with a summary of the concerns specifically addressed in the three installments of C.S. Lewis's Sci-Fi trilogy. A brief syopsis of the themes of Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength is given. It then moves on to compare and contrast the worldview (and cosmology) that Lewis depicts his main protagonist and hero, the philologist Edwin Ransom, formulating on the basis of his moral presuppositions from those of H.G. Wells and his protagonists. Lewis's beings are not only different from Wells' protagonists, but entirely at odds with them. Lewis's figures (aside from the figures of Weston and Devine) assume the legitimacy of natural law (the law of human nature) in all rational, bodily beings. Lewis calls such rational beings 'hnau'. Weston asserts that life is the greatest good even while he disavows all moral claims in pursuit of this 'life.' Rather than rebut such contradictions, as he often does in his apologetic works, Lewis shows their deficiency in creatures that, like him, sense the weight of glory. ❤️ If you find my channel helpful, become a channel member: / drscottmasson To support my channel and assist me in providing better content, please go here: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?token=...
