VOCE CONHECE O MERCADÃO DE MADUREIRA?
Madureira Market, also known simply as Mercadão or Grande Mercado de Madureira, is a popular market located in the Madureira neighborhood in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Situated between Avenida Ministro Edgard Romero and Rua Conselheiro Galvão, it is the largest in the city and one of the largest in Latin America, with 16 galleries and more than 580 shops. The popular market, which began as an agricultural fair in 1914, and since 1959 when then-President Juscelino Kubitschek inaugurated the Grande Mercado de Madureira, has established itself as the main commercial hub of the North Zone, which became popularly known as Mercadão. It recently received the title of Cultural Heritage of the Carioca People. History The Madureira Market, located where it is today, dates back to 1959. However, this world of merchandise emerged a little earlier, in another place. In 1914, the future Mercadão (Central Market) was inaugurated as a small open-air market, a point of sale for agricultural products. This market was located where the Império Serrano samba school's headquarters are today. Fifteen years later, in 1929, an expansion project transformed the open-air market into the largest food distribution center in the suburbs. Two decades later, in 1949, 26 more stalls were built for the direct distribution of goods from producers to the population. On December 18, 1959, with the presence of President Juscelino Kubitschek, the Mercadão de Madureira, as it came to be called, was inaugurated at the site where it remains to this day. Fire There was a major fire in 2000, and there was a risk that it would be the end of the Madureira Market. The site underwent a major modernization renovation, and on October 5, 2001, the Madureira Market reopened its doors, gaining more space between its corridors, escalators, and an air conditioning system. These were further advantages for a market that already offered low prices, and it gained comfort and security. Source: https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercad%...
