In a segment of the live broadcast held this Monday (15), the national coordinator of the Citizen Debt Audit, Maria Lucia Fattorelli, explains one of the most worrying mechanisms contained in PEC 65/2023. According to Fattorelli, during the pandemic, the Central Bank attempted to obtain authorization to purchase more than R$ 1 trillion in problematic assets from the financial market through PEC 10/2020, later transformed into EC 106/2020. At the time, strong public mobilization and legal challenges prevented this operation from going ahead. Now, PEC 65/2023 resumes this possibility by including a provision that, in the Citizen Debt Audit's assessment, opens the door for the Central Bank to carry out operations with high-risk assets from banks and financial institutions, transferring private losses to the public sector.
