A Secret World Revealed at Low Tide: Salt Creek Recreation Area

What started as a simple day trip turned into one of the most fascinating adventures we've had along Washington's coast. Join us as I take my wife tidepooling for the very first time at Salt Creek Recreation Area near Port Angeles, Washington. Getting there was part of the adventure—we drove an hour and a half, boarded the ferry, crossed the Hood Canal Bridge, and arrived on a perfect sunny day just in time for a spectacular low tide. As the ocean pulled back, an incredible world was revealed beneath our feet. We explored rocky tide pools filled with colorful marine life, including giant black katy chitons, gooseneck barnacles, purple sea urchins, hermit crabs, dire whelks, and a beautiful painted sea star. We also discovered fascinating marine plants and algae such as eelgrass, sea cabbage, nail brush seaweed, and branching coralline algae. Salt Creek Recreation Area is widely considered one of the best tidepooling destinations in Washington State, and it's easy to see why. Every pool held something new, making this an unforgettable first tidepooling experience. If you enjoy boating, fishing, wildlife, and exploring the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, you're in the right place.
