The fire broke out around 1:30 a.m. (0:30 GMT) Thursday in the Constellation bar, a popular spot for tourists, including many young people celebrating the New Year. "The majority of the victims were found inside the bar," announced the cantonal police chief, Frédéric Gisler, during a press conference in Sion, the regional capital. The death toll has now risen to 40. A more vague estimate of around 40 fatalities had previously been given. He added that 113 of the 119 injured had been formally identified. "For six others, the formal and final identification process is still underway."
