What is Mawlid? (In English) Mawlid means the celebration or remembrance of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The word “Mawlid” comes from Arabic and literally means “birth” or “place/time of birth.” In Islamic context Mawlid refers to gatherings where Muslims: Remember the life of the Prophet Muhammad Send salawat (peace and blessings upon him) Recite poems or stories about his life Give charity and food Teach about his character and teachings Evidence (Proofs) Used by Scholars Who Say Mawlid is Haram Scholars who say Mawlid (celebrating the birth of the Prophet) is Haram give several evidences from the Qur’an and Hadith. 1. It Was Not Done by the Prophet (ﷺ) The Prophet Muhammad never celebrated his birthday. Also: The Sahabah (Companions) did not celebrate it. The Tabi‘in (next generation) did not celebrate it. Scholars say: If Mawlid was good, the Prophet and his companions would have done it first. 2. Hadith About Innovation (Bid‘ah) The Prophet Muhammad said: “Whoever introduces into this matter of ours (Islam) something that is not from it, it will be rejected.” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim) Another hadith says: “Every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.” (Sunan an-Nasa’i, others) Scholars say Mawlid is a religious innovation. 3. Islam Is Already Complete Allah says in the Qur’an: “Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and chosen Islam as your religion.” (Qur’an 5:3) Scholars say adding Mawlid means adding something new to a completed religion. 4. It Started Long After the Prophet Some historians say Mawlid celebrations started many centuries later, during the rule of the Fatimid Caliphate.
