The most important thing is choosing the size; it's preferable to choose one with a more mature trunk to give it a more bonsai-like appearance. Then, you choose the design and start thinning out the branches, since they often come as hedges (as many shrub species are used in landscaping), but we're creating bonsai, so don't forget that.
