Assos Tarihi: MÖ. 6. yüzyılda kurulan Assos antik kenti, sönmüş bir volkanik tepe üzerinde yer aldığı için yapımında işlemesi zor ama son derece dayanıklı olan andezit taşı kullanılmıştı. Bu kentte yapılan lahitler antik dünyada çok meşhurdu ve bedenin hızlı bir şekilde toprak olmasını sağladığı için "insan yiyen lahit" olarak adlandırılırlardı. Anadolu'nun birçok yöresine Assos'tan lahit gönderilirdi. Assos aynı zamanda bir süre filozof Aristoteles'in bir süre yaşayarak bir felsefe okulu kurmuş olmasıyla da önemliydi. Kentin en yüksek noktasında bulunan Athena Tapınağı adını, Zeus'un kızı ve 12 Olympos tanrısından biri olan Athena'dan alır. Athena şehrin koruyucu tanrıçasıdır. Anadolu'da inşa edilen ilk ve tek Dor düzenindeki tapınak olan yapı, olağanüstü manzarasıyla da ilgi çeker. The city was constructed using andesite stone, which is difficult to process but extremely durable. Assos was known for its sarcophagi, which were famous in the ancient world for their ability to quickly decompose the body inside. These sarcophagi were referred to as 'man-eating sarcophagi' and were exported to various regions of Anatolia. Assos is a city where the philosopher Aristotle once lived and founded a school of philosophy. The Temple of Athena, named after the daughter of Zeus and one of the 12 Olympian gods who is also the patron goddess of the city, is located at the highest point of the city. It is the first and only Doric temple built in Anatolia and is notable for its extraordinary view. Assos features several historical sites from the Roman period, including an ancient theatre, agora, Necropolis, and city walls.
