Burns: Hot oil can splash or spill, causing serious burns. Is there any truth in this? Absolutely not. Home "frying" does not provide any reliable information about the quality of the oil. Uncontrolled conditions: In a home environment, it is impossible to accurately control the temperature, heating time, oxygen access and other parameters that are critical to assessing the stability of the oil. Distortion of results: You will only see visual changes (darkening, deposits, evaporation), but this will not allow you to draw conclusions about the quality of additives, the stability of the base oil or its protective properties. Moreover, these changes can be misleading. For example, darkening of the oil can indicate both its active work (neutralizing acids and retaining contaminants) and degradation. Inconsistency with real conditions: The engine operates in a very complex environment with constant circulation, cooling, pressure and exposure to combustion products. Simple heating in a cup does not simulate these conditions. How does this compare with NOACK tests and ash tests? Home "roasting" has nothing in common with professional laboratory tests. These are completely different approaches with different goals and methods. NOACK test (determination of loss by evaporation): Purpose: To determine the proportion of oil that evaporates at high temperatures under strictly controlled conditions. This is a key indicator of the tendency of the oil to burn off in the engine. Method: An oil sample is heated to a precisely defined temperature (e.g. 250°C) for a specified time (e.g. 60 minutes) in a special device with a constant air flow. The loss of mass of the sample is then measured as a percentage. Difference from "frying": This is a highly accurate, standardized test performed on specialized equipment. Home "frying" does not provide any quantitative indicator and cannot be compared with this standard. Sulfated ash tests: Purpose: To determine the content of inorganic (metallic) components in the oil that remain after complete combustion. These components are part of the additives and are important for modern engines with diesel particulate filters (DPF) and catalytic converters. Method: An oil sample is burned in a laboratory furnace at a very high temperature (e.g. 775°C) until all organic matter is removed. The remaining non-combustible residue (ash) is weighed and expressed as a percentage of the original mass of the oil. Difference from "frying": This is a chemical composition test that requires a high-temperature furnace and accurate scales. Home heating is not capable of completely burning the oil to ash residue and cannot quantify the ash content. Conclusion: Home "frying" of motor oil is a dangerous, unscientific and useless experiment that can lead to injuries, fires and will give a completely false idea of ​​the quality of the oil. There are strict laboratory standards and tests for evaluating the properties of motor oils that cannot be reproduced at home. Don't burn oil! Why are "home tests" harmful to you and your engine?
