EAA Oshkosh 1988
I made this video when I found the old VHS tape of my trip to the 1988 EAA Fly-in and Convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The old VHS tape was not properly stored, so there is substantial deterioration in quality. The tape was created using a primitive camcorder to VHS recorder hookup, creating one two hour tape from the four tapes made during the trip. The original tapes may have been higher quality, but I could not find them in my stash of old video tapes. The production quality was poor due to this editing setup, but it was also very poor because of poor scripting, poor narration, and poor videography. The original audio quality is also poor, partly due to the age of the tape, and partly because the in-cockpit audio was obtained from the camcorder microphone recording directly from the cockpit with the radio audio coming from the cockpit speaker turned to full volume. I have done my best to transform the original video into something with entertainment value. I was preparing for my third trip to the Oshkosh fly-in and decided to review my two previous trips that were made in 1988 and 2015. This lead to my discovering the old VHS tape that I had long forgotten about. I was reminded that after I returned from Oshkosh in 1988, I forced fellow Wake County Flying Club members to watch the entire two hour tape. Regret! Kip Homan invited me to fly with him in his 1958 Cessna 172 to Oshkosh, and I readily accepted. Kip is the family friend who took me flying in 1986 in a small airplane for the first time, which resulted in me being addicted to flying. Sadly, Kip was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in the late 1990s and passed away in February, 2001. He was 45 years old, one year older than me at the time. As a pilot, Kip was more "adventurous" than me. If you watch closely, you'll spot some pilot behavior that might attract YouTube perfect pilot trolls. I always felt safe flying with Kip, and he convinced me that flying was much safer than I had believed prior to flying with him. For nostalgia points, I'll rate the video above average, otherwise, view at your own risk. FYI, approximate cost: $208 (Piedmont airfare) + $85 (Gate pass, camping, tie-down) + $96 (shared flying costs) = $389
