Japanese Soldiers Were Horrified When They Saw 1,000 Steel Balls Wipe Out Their Banzai Charge

Japanese Soldiers Walked Into 122 Steel Balls at Guadalcanal They expected frightened Marines. They expected a bayonet charge to break the line. Instead, they ran into a cannon loaded like a shotgun. SUMMARY This documentary tells the story of the Battle of the Tenaru — one of the first brutal lessons Japan learned on Guadalcanal. On August 7, 1942, U.S. Marines landed on Guadalcanal and captured the unfinished Japanese airstrip that became Henderson Field. Whoever controlled that airfield controlled the sea lanes between America and Australia. Japan moved quickly to take it back. Colonel Kiyonao Ichiki and the elite Ichiki Detachment landed east of the Marine perimeter with orders to wait for reinforcements. Ichiki did not wait. He believed the Marines were weak, disorganized, and likely to collapse under a determined night assault. He was wrong. At the mouth of the Ilu River, Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Pollock and Colonel Clifton Cates had prepared the Marine line. Machine guns covered the sandbar. Mortars were zeroed in. And two M3 37mm anti-tank guns were hidden in position. Those guns had been brought to Guadalcanal to stop Japanese tanks. But that night, they were loaded with M2 canister rounds — thin metal shells packed with 122 hardened steel balls. When fired, each shell turned the anti-tank gun into a giant shotgun. Before the attack, a Solomon Island scout named Jacob Vouza was captured and tortured by Japanese soldiers. He refused to reveal the Marine positions. After being bayoneted and left for dead, he escaped, crawled through the jungle, and warned the Marines that the Japanese were coming. That warning gave the Marines just enough time. In the early hours of August 21, Ichiki’s men charged across the sandbar with bayonets fixed. At seventy yards, the 37mm guns opened fire. Canister rounds tore through the front ranks. Machine guns and mortars finished what the steel balls began. By morning, the elite Japanese assault had been destroyed. Ichiki refused to withdraw. Vandegrift ordered a counterattack. Marines crossed upstream, trapped the survivors against the sea, and finished the battle with rifle fire, aircraft, and Stuart light tanks. Of the first echelon of the Ichiki Detachment, roughly 774 to 800 men were killed. American losses were 41 killed and 71 wounded. This is the story of the night Japanese spirit met American steel — and broke.
