At present it is the best screening test available to exclude Down's syndrome (trisomy 21 or T21). It has very high negative predictive value for T21 (more than 99%). NIPT is not diagnostic test and also cannot exclude any structural anomaly (physical defect) and must be combined with high quality examination of the baby by ultrasound.
