Muhammad Amjad Saqib is a Pakistani social entrepreneur, development practitioner, former civil servant, and author, best known as the founder and executive director of the Akhuwat Foundation. Born on 1 February 1957 in Kamalia, Toba Tek Singh district of Punjab, he initially pursued a career in medicine, earning his MBBS from King Edward Medical College in 1982, before joining Pakistan’s civil service. Over time, he shifted his focus toward social development and poverty alleviation, eventually becoming one of Pakistan’s most prominent figures in the field of social entrepreneurship. In 2001, Saqib founded Akhuwat, an Islamic microfinance organization based on the principle of Qarz-e-Hasan (interest-free loans) and the concept of Mawakhat (brotherhood). The initiative began with a small-scale lending model but has since expanded into one of the largest microfinance networks in Pakistan. According to reported figures, Akhuwat has disbursed over PKR 220 billion in interest-free loans to more than 6 million families, maintaining a repayment rate of around 99.9 percent. The organization now operates hundreds of branches across hundreds of cities with thousands of employees. Beyond microfinance, Akhuwat has expanded into multiple social welfare sectors, including education, healthcare, clothing distribution, and support for marginalized communities. Its initiatives include Akhuwat Education Services, Akhuwat Clothes Bank, Akhuwat Health Services, and programs for transgender welfare, offering vocational training, medical camps, and social support. The organization has also established fee-free educational institutions, including Akhuwat College Kasur and plans for Akhuwat University, aimed at providing accessible higher education to students from low-income backgrounds. Amjad Saqib has also contributed extensively to literature and policy discourse, authoring several books on poverty alleviation, microfinance, and social development. His professional work has included consultancy and advisory roles with major international organizations such as the World Bank, UNICEF, Asian Development Bank, and International Labour Organization. He has also been invited to speak at leading global institutions including Harvard University, Oxford University, Cambridge University, and the United Nations, where he has advocated for holistic approaches to poverty reduction. Over the years, Saqib has received numerous national and international honors, including Pakistan’s Sitara-i-Imtiaz and Hilal-i-Imtiaz, as well as global recognition such as the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2021 for his contributions to interest-free microfinance. He has also been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and honored by organizations including the World Economic Forum and Commonwealth. His work continues to be widely recognized as a pioneering model of compassion-based financial inclusion and social welfare.
