Title: Wastewater Lifting Description: This learning object explains what a wastewater pumping station is, its basic characteristics, how it works, and its components. Aguado García, D. (2020). Wastewater Lifting. http://hdl.handle.net/10251/133858 Automatic description: In this video, a professor from the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at a polytechnic university offers an introduction to the sanitation system and the need to lift wastewater using pumping stations. He explains that urban sewage networks require a favorable slope to evacuate water by gravity to treatment plants. However, when gravity is insufficient due to topography or to avoid deep construction, pumping stations are used to lift and direct wastewater. He describes the configuration of a pumping station, which begins with a wet well where water accumulates until the pumps are activated. The pump raises the water to a higher level and then continues by gravity. Emphasis is placed on minimizing the length of the discharge pipe, which is more costly to maintain, and ensuring that the pumps can handle the maximum expected flow rate and the solids present in the wastewater to avoid blockages. Finally, conclusions are drawn on the importance of even water distribution to prevent blockages and problems associated with the corrosiveness and toxicity of wastewater. The need to regularly clean the residue that accumulates on the screens and the screening system is mentioned to prevent water filtration and unpleasant odors. It is recommended that the water not remain in the discharge pipe for more than twelve hours to prevent putrefaction.
