2022-08-10 On the way home from Szczecin (Previous episodes), Lila and I decided to take the "Dolna Route" and stop at Canpol (next episode), one of the coolest gas stations I've ever seen. The road led through Stargard. Stargard is one of the oldest Polish cities, having received city rights in 1243. The first place worth seeing is the Market Square. Stargard is immediately praised for its numerous free parking lots. The Old Town Square is one of the largest and most impressive squares in the city. The most valuable structure on the market square is the Collegiate Church of St. Mary, also known as the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the World. This magnificent structure dates back to the 13th century and is a highly valuable monument in Western Pomerania. Also worth noting on the market square are the beautiful, historic tenement houses and the interesting mosaic. The medieval gates guarding the city are also a very interesting attraction for art connoisseurs. These include: Pyrzyce Gate – built along with the city walls at the end of the 13th century. Its base is made of fieldstones, with the upper floors constructed of bricks. It has a defensive porch with embrasures. - The Rampart Gate – its origins date back to 1439. It was built in the Gothic and Renaissance styles. It is decorated with cornices and pilasters. The Mill Gate dates back to the 15th century. It is located on the Mill Canal. It was used to collect fees (known as tolls) from merchants transporting their goods by river. It has two distinctive octagonal towers. Today, all the gates are unique examples of the Gothic style and have been designated historical monuments. Another treat for lovers of medieval monuments are the towers, or structures forming part of the defensive walls, usually cylindrical in shape, used to defend the city. Around the 15th century, the towers were replaced by slightly different defensive structures. The 15th-century structure was called a basteja. In Stargard, you absolutely must see three magnificent and impressive towers. These are: Red Sea Tower – the oldest, dating from the second half of the 14th century. Standing 34 meters high, it is a magnificent achievement of Gothic architecture. This cylindrical tower is built of brick and topped with a very interesting, architecturally octagonal pyramid. White-Headed Tower – slightly younger. Its construction dates back to the first half of the 15th century. It has a square base that transitions into a cylindrical shape. The White-Headed Tower takes its apt name from the white cone that crowns it. Prisoners' Tower – dating from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. Also cylindrical, with arrow slits located on several levels. Its name is certainly not a coincidence.
