For his traditional State of the Union address, Donald Trump delivered his usual caricatured vision, boasting of having accomplished in one year "an unprecedented transformation" of his country, while also launching fierce attacks against the Democratic camp. "Our country is back (...) Inflation is falling, incomes are rising fast, the economy is booming like it has never been before," he boasted. And it doesn't matter that the Supreme Court struck down a large portion of his tariffs a few days earlier, raising the possibility of roughly $133 billion in refunds to the overtaxed importers. His justices are considered "idiots," "lapdogs" serving the "radical" left. But a majority of Americans believe these boasts more: nearly 60% disapprove of the way the White House occupant is conducting the country's economic policy. The 2.2% growth projected for 2025 is considered satisfactory, but it remains below the 2.8% target set for 2024, and far from Donald Trump's promises. As for inflation, which is weighing on households, it remains high at 2.4%. Donald Trump has boasted at length about his anti-immigration policies, asserting that the border has "never been safer," despite the deaths of two Americans during ICE operations earlier this year. When he applauded his anti-illegal immigration policies, blaming Democratic lawmakers, as he did for everything else, for a disastrous record, those seated opposite him did not stand. A sign of the political tension in the room, African American Representative Al Green even held up a sign reading "Black people are not monkeys," a reference to a video posted by the US president on Truth Social showing the faces of Barack and Michelle Obama superimposed on the bodies of primates, before being removed from the assembly. The other issue on which Donald Trump was expected to speak was none other than the Iranian threat, eight months after the US bombings of the Islamic regime's nuclear facilities. The White House occupant accused Tehran of having "developed missiles that can threaten Europe and [US] military bases" and of seeking "to build missiles that could soon reach the United States." In recent weeks, the American president has been massing troops in the Persian Gulf, raising fears of another attack. “We are in negotiations with them. They want to reach an agreement, but we haven’t yet heard those key words: ‘We will never have nuclear weapons,’” the American president concluded.
