I'm going to climb Mt. Hakusan, one of Japan's 100 most sacred mountains. I've planned to climb it many times, but I've never been blessed with good weather and have never been able to make it. Finally, after spending the night at the Hakusan Murodo Visitor Center, I was able to ascend to the highest peak, Gozenmine. Viewing Gozenmine illuminated by the morning sun and touring the ponds made for a truly wonderful climb. Sacred Mt. Hakusan has been known as a sacred mountain of worship since ancient times. It is said that Mt. Hakusan was once considered the home of gods, and was not a mountain that people could climb. This mysterious mountain has spread throughout the country as "Hakusan faith." The first person to summit Mt. Hakusan was a Heian period monk named Taicho. One night, he had a dream in which the goddess of Mt. Hakusan told him, "Come to Mt. Hakusan." Believing this revelation, Taicho set out for Gozenmine, the highest peak of the mountain. Climbing a mountain that no one had ever climbed before was apparently extremely difficult. After the founding of the mountain by the monk Taicho, ascetics began to enter Mt. Hakusan, and it remains a sacred mountain to this day. We started our ascent from Betsu-do Ideai on the new tourist trail. It's a wonderful, historic trail, but it was so hot... We were exhausted by the time we arrived at the Murodo Visitor Center. But we finally reached the summit of Mt. Hakusan. It was an emotional experience.
